Learn Something New Today

As a child we are encouraged to (and usually do) learn something new every day.

If you went to school for 6-9 hours a day and cannot explain or quanitfy what you learned, then something went terribly wrong. The same thing goes with work: if you went to work for 8-9 hours and cannot explain or quantify what you learned that day, then something is wrong.

We probably learn something at work everyday, but we often forget to quantify it. We not only have to learn, but we have to learn how to learn.

The world is changing and growing day to day, and to meet that challenge effectively, we need to grow every day. Never underestimate the importance of learning… formal, informal, street, experience, or otherwise.

Learning is critical to success. The people who get passed by are the ones who stopped learning how to learn.

Jamie said power just came back on.

She also said flooding of the Swatara Creek reached the train tracks. The power substation on the very left (corner of Race and Mill) is what caused power to go out.

Hoffer Park is flooded. Too bad. There is a very nice playground built by volunteers that probably got damaged :(

Here is the general area. The “A” denotes where Jamie lives, and just about under the label “Jednota” is where Penn State Harrisburg is located.

The Susquehanna River is higher than normal in this area but is not a flood concern since the river is so wide. Harrisburg and the Airport are currently unconcerned about the state of the river.

The smaller creeks and rivers are overflowing their banks, however. The river just under “Royalton” is the one that flooded the electric substation I mentioned earlier. In fact, if you follow that river up to the very northeast corner of the map you will find Hershey, PA (home of Hershey Chocolates). This is the very river that flooded Hershey Park during Hurricane Agnes in 1972.

If you follow the Susquehanna River to the very bottom of the map, you find Three Mile Island of the 1979 nuclear meltdown fame. Several press releases from Excelon Nuclear have stated Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station will continue operating and is presently does not anticipate any disruption from due to Tropical Storm Lee.

Jamie lives in Middletown, PA which sits off the Susquehanna River. Across Central Pennsylvania people have been ordered to leave their homes as the Susquehanna rises above flood stage.

Fortunately, Jamie lives downstream where the Susquehanna becomes nearly one mile wide, and the taller among us can typically walk across the entire waterway without getting their head wet (although such actions are strongly discouraged).

Interesting tidbit: the Susquehanna River System is regarded as the oldest or second oldest major system in the world being far older than the mountain ridges through which it runs. Evidence suggests the ancient Susquehanna predated the Appalachian orogeny meaning the river existed well before Pangaea broke up and formed the Atlantic Ocean.

Jamie says Middletown, PA lost power. She and a few others ventured out to take a look around the town and the entire substation for the area where she lives is flooded. She has pictures, but no way to send them at the moment (no power, no Internet).

Since she doesn’t know how long it will take to repair, she is turning off her phone for the time being. More to come.

Safety Issue or Just Lazy?

American Airlines announced it would try to compete with the better of the airlines by offering pajamas and turn-down service in their International First-Class product. It took all of a week before us lazy Americans decided that is a crazy amount of work. Never mind that many leading airlines offer this service.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA) filed a grievance, and because “this is too much work and we’re lazy” isn’t cause for filing a grievance the APFA is conducting a survey asking if the bedding or act of changing into pajamas is a safety hazard on the aircraft. Again, never mind that many leading airlines already offer this service.

The survey, which can be found via the previous link, asks questions like:

“Were there any safety issues with the bedding before landing?”

“Were there any safety issues with the turndown service at all?”

“Were there lines for the lavs when passengers changed into/out of pajamas?”

Service sucks in the USA because we Americans are lazy, and we consistently prove we are unable to provide quality service to our customers.

CVG is on my shit list. No data, voice only. ATT FAIL. Delta SkyClub serving drinks in plastic cups (smaller size means more tips?) And the T-Mobile hosted internet is suuuuuper slow (probably because ATT data is down now).

I have a pic, but I can’t upload it because my phone has no ATT data right now, and for whatever reason the T-Mobile authentication page (SkyClub Membership) will load on my MacBook but not on my iPhone… It’s a cluster-fail.

Wished I could see more, but I’m now on board my dinky Regional Jet to CVG.
